Shelter– March 2012

“He will cover you with His feathers,
and under His wings you will find refuge;
His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart…” Psalm 91:4

This world beats us up. Knocks us around. Chews us up and spits us out. Then, presumptuously it waits, with bated breath, for us to willingly pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, defiantly lift up our chin and face another day, another beating. Every day is a battle…

At the risk of sounding entirely negative, it is absolutely true that there are those days when we can move along happily, with sun on our face and the joys of life singing about us. Gifts of sweet and special moments to savor like candy slowly melting on our tongue. But let’s face it, the storms come. Life is a battle…

We cry. We lose. We grieve. We experience tragedy. We work and toil. We pursue. We grow. We change. We stand and fight. We get back up. We get knocked down. And yet…

And yet, we can know. Know. Without a doubt that we have been created for a special purpose and that the Creator, willingly and lovingly answers our groans for shelter in the storm. The Psalmist said in verse 1 of Psalm 91 “He who dwells in the shelter of the most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” I love the word “dwell”. It tells us that His love is our dwelling place, our abode -our home. We are certainly not guaranteed a free pass from life’s pain, but when we choose to abide in Him, His love becomes the refuge and we need not fear the outcome of our struggles. Ultimately, as it says in verses 15-16 “He will call upon me and I will answer him; I will deliver him…and with long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

Are you walking through the storm? Is the tempest’s wind simply too much to bear? Call on Him…it is then, in the shadow of His wings, that you can feel the full strength of His love. Despite the mistakes, the wounds, the regrets. We can come and He will welcome us in…into the Shelter of His wings…
